Seminar / Conference
Speakers:
1. Robin Shaw Manager, Self Insurers of South Australia Inc.
2. Neville John Director, KJK Legal
3. Jodie Bradbrook Principal, Bradbrook Lawyers
The speakers will present on the following topics.
- Workers Compensation – Robin will outline the key proposed changes to the legislation, which the government has promised will be a ‘root and branch’ review of the scheme. With potentially increased thresholds for compensability, and lower cut-off points for ongoing compensation, what are the implications for employers, and quite likely insurers, where we could see a rise in income protection and disability claims? What are the possible cultural changes that workplaces might undergo where the previous notion of compensation for life will end?
- Employment Relations – It is likely the new legislation will bring with it a heightened obligation for
employers to maintain injured employees in the workplace. Neville will discuss how the employment obligations under the new workers compensation legislation will impact on the employers’ management of the workplace, and the interaction of the new laws with the broader existing industrial & discrimination laws. - Work Health and Safety – With the likely reintroduction of common law liability for employers, a tension arises for business owners between taking steps to mitigate losses arising from such claims and the protection against self-incrimination. Jodie will explore this issue, and discuss the likely impact these changes will have on workplace relations, returning injured workers to work and maintaining an adequate defence in a safety prosecution. She will also briefly explore issues relating to obtaining insurance for work health and safety offences.
